quicktime in Windows - video not playing!
Hello
In order to test a QT detection script, I uninstalled Quicktime from Windows. After I got the script working, I re-installed QT using Apple's latest standalone installer.
Now, when my projector plays, Quicktime movies do not appear (I can, however, hear them). I get no errors, just no video. Bitmaps which appear under the video show up just fine.
If I open the videos directly from the Projector's CD ROM, they open and play fine in Quicktime.
Any ideas here?
Thanks,

Hi Steve,
Is the version of your previous Quicktime player the same with your new one?
If not, try to install the previous version in your machine and try it out
again.

Re: quicktime in Windows - video not playing!
Steve,
Usually what you are describing is caused by creating the video with a newer
version of a codec than is present on the end users machine. So, for
example, if you created the video using the Sorenson 3 Pro Codec and the end
user has QT 4 installed than they will not see the video but will hear the
audio just fine.

Re: quicktime in Windows - video not playing!
Well,
I was replacing Quicktime 6 with Quicktime 6.0.4. I think the movies should work fine. They play back fine if I open them in Quicktime Player in Windows. I can even play back the movies in MSIE. Just not Director.
this is a rather important issue, and I need this CD to work in order to get freelance jobs and earn money for January's rent. Any input is appreciated.
Also, to the other poster, All the movies are either MP4 files or .mov files encoded with Sorenson 3. They were all created in the MacOS.
Thanks,

Re: quicktime in Windows - video not playing!
If you can play the QT files alone then you have QT properly installed.
Are you using Director MX? It sounds from your description that the QT
files were playing correctly in the Director movie with the previous
version of QT 6, yes?
Is there any possibility that you have either turned off the video
button in the QT properties tab of the property inspector for that
member, and/or, set the direct to stage, DTS, for that member to off?

Dude! - You solved it! - But now the video is ROTATED!!! WTF?!?!
Dude, you rock.
For some reason, the "Show Video" box is now unchecked in the Quicktime tab. It's unchecked for all the videos in my Director presentation. Very strange.
What is even weirder, is that when I check the box to turn the movies back on, they show up rotated about 20 or 25 degrees. The sprite properties do not show any rotation and appear to be unchanged.
http://www.dorseygraphics.com/director_screencap.jpg
In this image, you can see the black outline that the video is supposed to occupy. You can also see the rotation.
Any ideas here? This is starting to freak me out.
Thanks again,

This could be a good time to use File->Save As... because when Strange Things
start happening it may be that something is corrupted in the .dir file.

Is it fixed by re-linking the movies?

OK, I solved the problem, but not by finding out what was wrong.
Since the video was not working due to a problem in the properties inspector, and not due to some underlying problem with Director or Quicktime, I decided to duplicate an older iteration of the project from my Mac (where it was originally created) and copy it to my PC where that checkbox would be still checked for all the movies.
All the videos now play back without rotation just fine. I had to update some of the scripts to work in Windows in stead of Mac, but everything is working fine now.
I still do not know why the video is rotated.
BTW - In Windows, I'm using Director 8.5 - not MX. The Director file was originally made in Director MX on the Mac. I don't know if that makes a difference.
Thanks,

Re: quicktime in Windows - video not playing!
What version of Director are you using? Are the QT videos flattened? The
latest version of QT is 6.4, so if "6.04" wasn't a typo then you might want
to upgrade to 6.4. Also make sure that there is not an earlier version of
QT on the computer.

Re: quicktime in Windows - video not playing!
All of the movies are flattened. I am quite sure that the rotation problem is not due to any discrepancy in the movie files themselves. The same movies play back fine in the version of the project that I copied from the Mac.
The quicktime version is 6.4. I constantly confuse the version numbers because they seem to change so fast. I downloaded the latest standalone installer from the Apple site just three days ago.
Thanks

Re: quicktime in Windows - video not playing!
Steve,
I hadn't seen the posts where you have solved your problem, chalk one up to
Rob. One issue that might come back on you is that Director 8.5.1 still
uses the old QT3 Xtra. As such it does not fully support the MPEG 4 QT
codec and this may be causing you problems. Director MX uses the new QT6
Xtra and will support almost all of the QT 6 codecs.

Re: quicktime in Windows - video not playing!
Funny you should say that. . .
I had rendered two of my movies to .mp4, and one plays back in Director 8.5 Win, while the other will not. I re-rendered the offender to Sorenson 3 (like all of it's brothers and sisters) and it works great. But that first mp4 movie plays back just fine in Director.
Whatever! As long as it works!
Another point - I was having the dreaded problem where Win can't find movies on an ejected disk. Apparently, clearing the "Open recent" menu (found in the quicktime player window) fixes this. I just hope it's not a problem for the recipients of the CR ROM.
