Reading old EPS files - Adobe Illustrator Windows

I have 80 EPS files purchased a long time ago that are now impossible to replace. The headers show that they are Adobe 3.0 EPSF 3.0 files created by Illustrator 4.0 which i dont have now. I have tried to open these files in Illustrator 11 and they give a message *Cant open the Illustration. The Illustration contains an incomplete or garbled object description* Offending Operator !S. Looking at a listing of the file i cannot find that offending operator at all. Any advice/help would be appreciated to be able to open these files and maybe save them as something ...

Have you tried placing the files instead of opening them?

    Len,

There are many reasons for the "Offending Operator" error message, including the existance of a corrupted font, does your file error message tell you what type of offending operator it found? Could, for instance these EPS files have been created on an early MAC Illustrator but trying to open in your PC Illustrator? Early on you had to have version to version to open cross platform files, as I recall.

If you have Acrobat you could try Distilling the files there. I find that Distiller has a higher tollerance for PostScript than does Illustrator, and have often been able to make a PDF -- which I can open in Illustrator -- from the most obscure PostScript sources, like CorelDraw, MS Worst, MS Punisher, or raw PS files generated by printer drivers.

Looking at the file, there is some extra junk at the beginning and end of the file. However, even if I get rid of that, it still won't open.

However, CoralDraw 10 opens the file up just fine.

I didn't know CorelDraw could do anything involving PostScript "just fine". Congratulations! Now save as Illustrator EPS and Bob's your uncle.

Coreldraw 10 does open them, some of the selection i have tried do have a colour glitch or 2 but a little work will soon fix it!
    Many thanks for your help
