Recommended workflow for artwork with gradients - Macromedia Freehand

Hello All, Can somebody please advise on what the recommended workflow is to print FH artwork that has a lot of gradient fills. I would like to output to print ready PDF. Like many other users, I am having issues with the gradients banding. I have also used Gaussian blur effects which do not have clipping paths (clipping paths would be difficult to implement for this piece). I have exported to virtually every file format without success I am using InDesign 2 for layout (but also have Quark 4.11 if that will make a difference). I have read a number ...

Default Recommended workflow for artwork with gradients

    Hello All,

Can somebody please advise on what the recommended workflow is to print FH
artwork that has a lot of gradient fills. I would like to output to print
ready PDF. Like many other users, I am having issues with the gradients
banding. I have also used Gaussian blur effects which do not have clipping
paths (clipping paths would be difficult to implement for this piece). I have
exported to virtually every file format without success I am using InDesign 2
for layout (but also have Quark 4.11 if that will make a difference). I have
read a number of different post in a number of different forums, all suggesting
various workarounds, but non have produced useable results.

Any help would be greatfully appreciated.

    Hi, Adam-

Are they gradients or blends you're having trouble with?

And I would stay away from raster effects like Gaussian blur for print work. What are you using the blur for?

How will this be printed? On an inkjet color printer or CMYK inks on an
    offset press?

What is the printer resolution as set in the doent panel. This controls
the number of steps in a gradient and a blend (when the blend is created).

How are you preparing the PDF? Do you have Acrobat Pro/Distiller?

As Wes said, Raster Effects such as Gaussian Blur Effect are not advisable
in print work. They're fine for RGB web images.
