    Hi Leo,

I have listed the steps that you can follow.

    1. Create a Rectangle above your image.
    2. In the Properties Inspector, click Fill Option > Linear Gradient(its the
pop-up menu from which you can choose a gradient type).
    3. Click on the Fill Color Box to open the "Edit Gradient pop-up window"
    4. In the Preset section, Choose Black and White Gradient.
    4. Click an area between black and white to add a new color. (Your mouse
    should display a "+")
    5. You should have three color on your Gradient Color Ramp. (Black - White -
    Black)
    6. Choose both layers (Bitmap and Rectangle)
    7. Modify > Mask > Group as Mask.

You can also use the Fade Image Command in Fireworks.
    1. Select the image on your document.
    2. Choose Commands > Creative > Fade Image

    I hope this helps.

    Hey Leo....

I am going to send you a PNG file that may make things easier.

There is a bitmap and a rectangle. For the time being, I left them
ungrouped so it would be easier for you to examine.

Open the file and make sure that the Layers Panel is visible.

There is a bitmap and a rectangle with a linear gradient file. I left them
ungroup so you could examine the fill options for the rectangle. That might
make it easier to visualize what Marlon mean by the gradient ramp having
    three colors.

Notice that the rectangle covers the entire canvas.

When you have examined everything, select both rectangle and bitmap by
highlight them both in the Layers Panel or choosing Select>Select All from
    the Select Menu

    The choose Modify>Mask>Group As Mask.

Everything that was black in the rectangle will fade in the bitmap and
everything that was white will remain opaque. Everything in between should
    transition smoothly.

Give it a try and post back when you can.

    Cheers,
    Sam
