    Default refresh a layer

I have a coldfusion query that retrieves some categories from a table
    <CFQUERY name='judgingtitles' datasource='project'> SELECT project, category,
proj_key FROM main WHERE category='x' </CFQUERY> Now this lists the
categories like this Item1 Item2 Item3 etc These categories I want the user to
be able to click on and turn on a hidden layer (if it isnt already) and then
display the appropriate query results that would run when they lick on the
    link. (query code below) <CFQUERY name='judgingitems' datasource='projects'>
    SELECT j.proj_key, j.Junior, j.year, m.project FROM judging j INNER JOIN
    main m ON m.proj_key = j.proj_key WHERE year ='04-05' AND m.proj_key=proj-key
</CFQUERY> The questions do I need to pass a URL varaible or can I refresh
the layer without reloading the page. Any Ideas??
