Register the database Mac OSX
Can anyone help I'm trying to add a database using the Microsoft Access Unicode
driver. I've entered the CF Datasource Name (cftutorial) and the database file
location
(MacintoshHD/Applications/ColdFusionMX7/wwwroot/CFIDE/gettingstarted/cftutorial/
cftutorial.mdb) but when I click test it does nothing.
What am I doing wrong?
thanks for your help

Re: Register the database Mac OSX
So OK, we're trying to do the tutorial in the
'steps_for_building_dynamic_pages_en.pdf' and we're on a Mac, we don't have MS
Access as a database. Can some of the other database options be used (
Microsoft SQL server, MySQL, Oracle, Sybase ), although these seem more
complicated to configure?

Re: Register the database Mac OSX
Correct, Access won't work on the Mac. If you haven't done so already I
suggest the latest installer for the Mac. It was greatly improved and it
pre-installs the Pointbase database versions of the sample apps. I also use
MySql with CF on the mac which is much better than Access, and can be used in a
production site.

Re: Register the database Mac OSX
I am now trying to set up the MySQL database, so that I can use this for the
tutorial. My settings are (and I'm guessing here):
CF Data Source Name = cftutorial
Database = cftutorial
Server = http://127.0.0.1 Port = 8500
I'm getting a long error message that starts:
Connection verification failed for data source: cftutorial
java.sql.SQLException: Cannot connect to MySQL server on http:8500.
Are my settings correct?

Re: Register the database Mac OSX
Looks like their documentation needs updating. They still treat Mac like a
second class citizen. It only installs the following datasources:
cfartgallery_pb, cfbookclub_pb, cfcodeexplorer, cfdocexamples. Possibly book
club may be used in the tutorial. I haven't tried it in awhile.
As an alternative, check out
http://127.0.0.1/cfide/gettingstarted/experience/index_content.cfm for the
snippets. That is a great cheat sheet for learning the basics. Start with the
"Getting Started with CFML" folder - especially CFQuery and CFOutput. Once you
get that the rest is downhill. Those databases are configured right for the
doc examples.

Re: Register the database Mac OSX
A good driver we've been testing is the HXTT pure type 4 MS Access driver
(www.hxtt.com).
(yes, you read that right - Type 4). It has a trial period of 30 days.
It has passed our internal regression tests but we haven't load tested it yet.
It's probably OK for what you're trying to do.
It worked OK for me on the Mac.
Driver URL: jdbc:access:////Applications/JRun4/cfdocexamples.mdb
(jdbc:access:4 slashes)
Driver Class: com.hxtt.sql.access.AccessDriver
Username: system
That should get you connected. Take down the Access_JDBC30.jar (The JDBC 3.0
version) and place it in the:
/ColdFusionMX7/runtime/servers/lib directory or the /JRun4/servers/lib
directory (depending on installation type).
Good luck.
