Default Registering Illustraror 9 or 10

I am looking to purchase Illustrator 9 or 10 from e-bay. Some of the software for sale are used and possibly already registered by a former owner that is not the seller of the product. My concern is that the software won't work properly if I can't register it. Does anyone know if Adobe Illustrator will work properly if it isn't registered. Some programs, such as Microsoft Office, will give you only 15 uses until you have to register the software. If you don't register it, it won't work any longer. Please advise! Thank you!

I think you should give used software a miss - search for reputable software dealers - many of them have old stock at a good price. Then you can upgrade when finances permit. If you are a student, you can purchase Academic versions at a considerable saving.

Thank you Karen for your advice... I will look into that for sure! But the question still remains: will Illustrator 9 or 10 work if it isn't registered? Does anyone know?

Timothy, why are used copies illegal? Can't someone sell their software if they are no longer using it or don't like it???? Afterall, I know that Adobe offers a downloadable and printable form that allows the original and registered owner of the software to transfer the license to the new owner upon sale of the software ~ www.adobe.com/support/pdfs/cstofo.pdf

But you have to be purchasing the software from the owner of the license.

If it were illegal, how could so many people be getting away with it so blatently on e-bay? I'm not saying you are wrong...I'm just curious.

Cheryl,

Used copies are legal.

Timothy just proved a point about the registration key which may be lacking when you buy used software. It should follow the software, of course.

Cheryl,

2nd. hand copies that have not been used for an upgrade and are sold with
the original CD AND User Guide along with transfer of License, and all
copies having been removed from the original owner's machine(s) are
perfectly legal.

However, I'm willing to bet that that will not apply to more than 10% (at
most) of the ones offered on e-bay !

Beats me. All those WAREZ sites selling "OEM" versions of the software don't seem to go away either. Even after several reports to piracy@adobe.com.

Good luck finding legit used software. Just be ultra-careful bordering on paranoid and you might come out with something legit.

Some of them don't. I helped get someone selling CD-R copies of Adobe software on eBay arrested for Postal fraud.

I had bid on what was described as a "new in the box" copy of Adobe Premiere only to find it was a CD-R filled with software. That was the last time I tried to get a good deal on software through eBay.

I've bought perfectly good, legal, used and even old but unopened software on eBay.

That being said, the amount of illegal and counterfeit stuff going on there is enormous. In the jewelry arena, Tiffany is currently suing eBay because they want to hold somebody responsible, and them trying to police the fraud on a case-by-case basis is nigh-impossible. eBay has so far removed listings for over 19,000 items that Tiffany identified as offering counterfeit goods.

Academic versions being sold to anybody who wants them is another common grey-market activity on eBay. Some folks will require academic credentials, but most don't care.

Cheers,

T

I have obtained a copy of Adobe Persuasion in an effort to open some old talks I have given. I switched from Mac to Windows and can't use my old Persuasion application. However, the application I bought (for $0.50 on eBay) doesn't have a serial number and I can't install the damn thing. Is there a way around this? Thanks.

If you are going through an academic reseller you can get a really good deal (Entire Premium Creative Suite for $379.00.) However, you must be registered either for an class featuring an Adobe product or a full time student. These copies are full software and can be used professionally without "upgrading" to a commercial version (unlike Quark and Macromedia products.) Most of my design students take advantage of the offer at some point during their student career!

YEAH and thanks ADOBE!!!

Christine,

That's not going to help Aaron where Persuasion is concerned - Persuasion
was a PowerPoint-type application discontinued by Adobe many years ago, and
only Persuasion is going to open his existing files...

Aaron,

I doubt you would get Persuasion to run under a modern Operating System even
if you had a serial number to install it with.

Actually, I was able to get a Mac version of Persuasion and open the talks I had. The slides were okay although some the sidebars were incomplete. I have just copied and pasted the slides I wanted to keep into PowerPoint and used a flash drive to put it on my new Dell. I agree with you that what I was trying to do is a waste of time. Thanks for your thoughts.
