Is the remote registry service running on the remote machine?
Is the Personal Firewall turned off?
Is the server service running?
Does the XP machine have a non blank password for the administrator account?

On the Win 2K machine, can you open the registry editor and then connect to
the remote machine's registry? (reading the registry via remote desktop
client is really a local connection to the registry and is not a remote
connection to the registry) If you can't open the registry via registry
editor remotely (from the Win 2K machine) you won't be able to use MBSA or
Hfnetchk.

Make sure before you try and read the remote registry that you're logged in
user account on the Win2K machine has proper permissions (administrator) to
the remote machine - or you'll need to make an admin connection to the
remote machine first.
