Default removing or replacing color or background

I am using Fireworks 4. Is there an easy way to replace an entire color or background?

I have used the magic wand with varying tolerances and feathering, aliasing, etc., but i have to go piece by tedious piece and it still doesn't work. The problem is my image is a purse with alot of fringe over a color (the color peeks through) and when i use the magic wand it inevitably removes fringe or doesn't work. The link is below. I left the pictures large so someone could get a good idea of the fringe section.

    Thanks very much.

Wow, that's as challenging as hair!

Your best bet is tracing the edge with the Pen tool, and knocking out
the background with a mask. Masking is almost always the best solution,
but especially in cases this complex.
