What do "Image Interpolation" in the .EPS save dialog box and "Save Image Pyramid" in the .TIF save dialog do?

Please be as technical as possible.

[CAUTION - it may refer to an earlier version of Photoshop]

    Image Pyramid ...

the save image pyramid option allows you to save multiple resolutions
of an image. the top of the pyramid is the lowest resolution while the
bottom of the pyramid is the highest resolution. you can choose to open
any of the resolutions. while adobe indesign supports image pyramids,
not many other programs, including the current version of photoshop, support
pyramid files right now. photoshop opens the image at the highest resolution
within the file. i'd leave this option unchecked ...

    ...

    ...

check image interpolation. this option anti-aliases (softens jagged edges)
of low-resolution images when they are printed.
