Request for Shockwave 10 Content Proposals
Dear Developer,
November is just around the corner, and this year?s U.S. Presidential election
is heating up! I?m interested in finding out if any of you are working on, or
have ideas for, election-related content. If so, Macromedia would be interested
in talking to you about creating cool, viral, election-themed Shockwave 10
content that could be used for marketing the latest version of Shockwave. Who
knows, it may just be the next big hit?
Your proposal should include a brief overview of your idea, including: a
relevant discussion of the theme, storyline, cast of characters, approximate
length, game-play instructions or interactivity highlights, or drawings.
Include links to prototypes or mock-ups if they are available.
Please send your proposals to me at ehuang@macromedia.com by 4PM PST, MONDAY,
AUGUST 30TH.
I can?t wait to see what you come up with!
Best regards,
Emmy Huang

Re: Request for Shockwave 10 Content Proposals
History of misses
Intel's membership in the Web 3D Consortium wasn't its only 3D misfire in
recent years. The company's April 20 announcement of the 3DIF marked its
third major 3D collaboration strategy since 2000, when it claimed its new
partnership with San Francisco-based Macromedia would "allow 3D to take off
on the Web."
By all accounts, that hasn't happened.
Shockwave 3D "didn't become the universal application that they had hoped,
of course," Maher said. "It's still a function within Macromedia's tools.
Intel was the more disillusioned party because Macromedia didn't open it up
as freely as Intel thought they were going to. In order to author stuff, you
had to use Macromedia's tools."
Macromedia did not return calls seeking comment.
Benoit said he didn't know whether or not his company and Macromedia had
quarreled over Shockwave 3D's openness. But he noted that in figuring out
where to go from the moribund arena of 3D shopping and online games, Intel
asked Macromedia to continue their partnership.
Macromedia, according to Intel, turned down the chipmaker.
"We invited Macromedia to participate, but they basically realized that they
wanted to move away from 3D because it didn't pan out from a revenue
generation perspective," Benoit said. "So they redirected their resources to
their core products like Flash."
The failure of the collaboration between Intel and Macromedia took a heavy
toll on the 3D start-ups it inspired.
"That was a period when everyone thought 3D on the Web was going to be
huge," Maher recalled. "And there was so much hope that it spawned a lot of
businesses. A lot of companies placed their bets on it, and they were all
sort of murdered by the failure of that collaboration."
Intel blamed the Shockwave 3D failure to live up to expectations on the
vagaries of the market, and said it had drawn on that experience in deciding
to quit the Web 3D Consortium and spend the next several months doing market
research with the likes of Boeing, BMW, General Electric, Hewlett-Packard,
Lockheed and Airbus.
"We missed the target (with Shockwave 3D) because at that time, the 3D focus
was on games, entertainment, the retail space," Benoit said. "With the
Internet bust, it just didn't pan out. That's why we took the approach we
did this time, which was to go to the end users first and find out what they
wanted."

Re: Request for Shockwave 10 Content Proposals
All,
FIrst off, can we please keep threads on topic? If you want to ask about 3D
engine improvements then please feel free to do so but in another thread. That
way topics can more easily be tracked and followed and it avoids cluttering
this thread with other discussions.
As far as that Intel interview goes, it's a repost and I responded to it when
brought up last time. The interview does not accurately reflect the
relationship between Macromeda and Intel, the article's quotes are badly taken
out of context and as such I would recommend not giving it much weight.
Will there be a 3D update? I still really can't say. The truth is that it
boils down to finding a way to make the feature work give us a better return
on the investment. It's an expensive feature to do (doubling our resource and
time demanads while not simultaneously doubling revenue). Me, I'm personally
very interested and am giving it another go with a few coworkers on engineering
and product management. I can't share anything public at this time but we're
seeing about some creative ways to get this feature moving forward again.
That's a lot of talk though and not much action, so for you folks it's just
more characters on this page, so I understand that folks might not give what
I'm saying much value. Fair enough, proof can only come through releasing
updated bits. I'm hoping to make that happen, but cannot offer any guarantees.
Cheers,
Tom Higgins

i agree, sorry for the off topic post within this thread, just responding to
the direct question asked, in a direct way. And Im not so sure the article
can be dismissed as easily as you say Tom. Others have different experiences

Well, after seeing the article we got on the phone with Intel and they were
significantly less than pleased with how the interview was published. I'm not
saying throw out what's said, but I am suggesting that it be read with the
understanding that it's not entirely accurate.
And yes, I'm now Product Manager for Director, Emmy Huang (originator of this
thread) is the Product Manager for the Shockwave Player. Between us we hope to
provide some better direction for Director/Shockwave, but there's much to be
done, many battles to fight and a tough road ahead. We'll do our best.

Hi Thomas,
Thank you very much for your reply. We thrust in you and Emmy.
Shockwave3D was released about 3.5 years ago and I think it is still the
best web3d technology.
Please don't let Shockwave3d die.

Re: Request for Shockwave 10 Content Proposals
Hi Tom,
I appreciate that you and Emmy have a gret deal of issues on your plate, the
very least being the future of the 3D xtra. I understand that businesses are
governed by ROI, and to-date the 3D side may have consumed more than it
delivered. However, I think things are about to change for the following
reasons. Let me explain.
3D on the web has been hamstrung for the following reasons:
1. 3D cards have not been pervasive enough
2. Download requirements for compelling 3D content has been excessive
(comparatively to normal 2D content)
3. 3D imagery did not accurately reflect or represent real life products,
therefore limiting mainstream acceptance (i.e. businesses)
All these "issues" are about to go away...
1. Microsoft (who unfortunately have a huge influence) will be releasing their
next operating system in a year or so, which will rely heavily on 3D rendering.
This will have the resultant effect that ALL PCs will have quite decent
graphics cards.
2. Broadband is increasingly prevalent, and prices have dropped considerably
for both consumers and content providers. The time and cost per megabyte is
dropping all the time.
3. The past 3 years have seen great revolutions in realtime 3D rendering
technologies. Pixel and vertex shaders have allowed the creation of realistic
surfaces for 3D models. Combined with other quality enhancing features such as
anisotropic filtering and anti-aliasing, and you can produce VERY realistic
looking 3D models that are truly representative of their real-life
counterparts. This will make it both feasible and attractive for businesses to
have their products viewable in 3D online.
Macromedia were visionary in their view that 3D will revolutionize the web
experience. However, the revolution is happening a little later than everyone
expected. The required critical mass will be achieved by Microsoft's next move,
and if Director is kept up-to-date, it will be well poised to take advantage of
this paradigm shift.
The current 3D product is very good. The main thing it is lacking is support
for pixel and vertex shaders. You have done most of the hard work already.
Adding support for these new shaders is only a change to the rendering pipeline
- not too big a job. There are many 3rd party tools available for creating and
testing the shaders.
If you need a business case for continuing developing and enhancing the 3D
xtra, I hope this helps...
