Resetting tools

I'm new to Illustrator and having an issue... While experimenting with tools I seem to have a recurring issue. Here's a specific example:

In attempting to create numerous radial lines emminating from the center of a filled circle, i used the flare tool and adjusted the properties so i would just have very thin black lines with a couple of rings. Thats fine, worked out great.

Now I want to use the flare tool to create an actual lens flare effect (as I saw when initially applying the tool). Now i cant get the flare tool back too it's original config. It wants me to have just a solid line and a circle, just those two elements. Also the preview box is greyed on the properties window.

Any Ideas?

In cases like this, try the Great Invocation: delete the AIPrefs file, FAQ item #4.

Just in case...

Regarding the preview button being grayed: Was a Flare object selected when you opened the dialog? If you open the dialog by doubleClicking the tool when no object is selected, there is no object in which to render the preview, so the preview checkbox is grayed.
