Default Reshaping a photo in Illustrator

Can someone PLEASE explain how to reshape a photo (.jpg) with Illustrator CS (using Windows XP)? I want to "cut" a picture into a shape such as a circle, oval, heart. I do not have Photoshop (only Photoshop Elements) and I tried using the Divide Object Below function but that does not work with pictures....

Select your shape and your photo (with the shape on top) then press [Ctrl]+[7]... Viola. :)

Timothy's method is the keystroke version of selecting two or more objects and using the top object as a mask.

By the way, I think you can do this directly in PS elements: put the heart shape on a second layer and use the wand (or whatever) to select the shape. Go to the underlying layer and select inverse and then push the delete key. (I don't believe PS Elements has masks, but it does have layers and selection tools). Finally delete the shape layer.

Post this question in the PS elements forum and you will probably get other answers. If you are drawing your own shapes and adding fancy text, then yes, it would be easier to do in Illustrator with the method mentioned in the first post.

THANK YOU!!! I used Timothy's method, it worked perfectly (quick and easy). Next question, if I want to add a thin black border around the edge of the picture (that I cut into a custom shape), what would be the easiest way to do this in Illustrator (Windows XP)?

    Stroke the mask

If I remember right, that got Jim Carrey into a lot of trouble...

Thank you. This method worked for the custom shape image but when I want to add a stroke to a regular image it doesn't work. Any suggestions?

    Carmen,

A placed image on its own has no path for you to stroke, and therein lies your problem.

Here's a good way to do it:
