restrict access to registered users

I'd like to require a serial number, selected from a finite list, for access
to certain areas of my web site.

Any thoughts on how this might be done, or what I might search for that
would do something similar to this? I'd like to avoid requiring the user to
go through a registration process, other than having the serial number.
