Returning users in a role - Macromedia ColdFusion

Basically, in my database, I have the login table which has a roles column, and each person has their roles defined, seperated by columns. This is nothing new. What I need to be able to do is to send an email out to everyone in a certain role. I know how to check if a user is in a role, but is there a more efficient way to do this than to loop through all the people in the database and check whether they're in that role, and if so send the email? Thanks, Dan...

Do you mean that each role has its own field? What's the structure of this
    roles table?

Use LIKE '%role_name%' (syntax for Oracle) in queries and if you need use CONTAINS #variable.var_name# in cfifs.
