Run InDesign off a server??
Hi,
A company I do work for recently bought two copies of InDesign,
whatever the newest version is called, to start replacing PageMaker
(RIP :o( ), but there's a bit of a hiccup.
Because I work on-call / contract and not as a full time employee I
have to use whichever iMac happens to be unused by the regular staff
when I'm there. What I need to do is install the two copies of InDesign
on the iMacs where they will be used the most, but to save having to
"kick" staff off their own iMacs it would be great to also have the
ability to run InDesign on one of the other four iMacs (or even the
iBooks) using the original as a server ... obviously only the two legal
licenses would ever be running at the same time.
Is this possible and legal? Or do I have to continually move the
installation and authentication number to whichever iMac I'm working on
and then back when I'm finished?
Eventually they will purchase more copies of InDesign, but being
non-profit they don't have money to throw around and have to reply on
grants and donations coming in.

This all depends on the EULA that came with your software. We have no idea what type of license you have.

If you bought single versions, no, it's not legal. And even if it was,
it wouldn't run very well and is completely unsupported.

You might want to consider the Indesign Server version.

I don't think so. From what I know, InDesign Server is designed for automated, hands-off production with no user interface, and must be driven by some external application, or script process. This is not what Harry seems interested in.
I would suggest, though Harry, that you read the EULA, and also read about Activation here:
<http://www.adobe.com/products/activation>
With two licenses, you have more flexibility than you might think, and transferring activation from one machine to another is quite quick and easy, assuming you have an Internet connection.

I will have to try reading the EULA when I get more time at their
offices.

I'll have a look at that link and the EULA.
I've only installed one copy so far and it had timeout problems during
the activation process. After a couple of tries I gave up and used the
phone-in service to get the number instead. I did write down the
number, luckily. When I get around to installing the second copy I'll
give it another try.
The same timing out often happens with Adobe's website whenever I go
there. It happens from two different ISPs as well - one "broadband" (or
at least what Telecom NZ calls broadband) and another is dial-up - and
two totally separate computers.
I guess another way might be to install one copy of InDesign on a
bootable external drive (if they had one!) and use that on whichever
computer I'm using.

My activation experiences have all been in the US, so may not be indicative of how it works for you.

You could try that, but I think it may not work as I seem to recall that the activation is tied to unique attributes of the disk and the machine.

Harry,
Please turn off the autoquote in your newsreader. It really jams up the
web view and isn't necessary here.
Thanks,
