Running Optimize causes Adobe 8 Pro to hangup
I have run into a problem trying to optimize a 38 megabyte PDF file using Acrobat 8 Professional. When I run Optimizer (using the default settings), Acrobat will get to a certain point, and then just appear to hang up. I have let it run as long as 45 minutes before having to do a "Force Quit" on it. The force-quit window shows Acrobat as "not responding". I have tried this on two different iMac Core 2 duos with 2 MB RAM, as well as on our X-Serve with 4 MB Ram.
Version of Acrobat: 8.0.0
Version of OS X: 10.5.4
I have noted that there are updates available for Acrobat 8, but have not been able to install them.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Running Optimize causes Adobe 8 Pro to hangup
IF you were running OSX.4.11 I would tell you to remove alll Traces of Acrobat (except your Data Files) Then reinstall from your Acrobat 8 install disk. The try to apply the updates.
One thing to consider, Adobe is unual in that they are the only software company that doesn't roll all previous updates in to the newest updates. Like Apple, and Microsoft.
You have a strict order of doing things. for example if you say ahve a 8.0.1 update you have to install that before 8.0.2 and so on. You cannot s kip updates.
And if you use the automatic updater feature from with acrobat you slect the oldest update first, have it start downloading, the switch back to program and quit the program (not the auto updater). Updating previously running application is a no-no regardless of what anyone says. If you want a Trouble free install , as soon as you get the update started downloading quit Acrobat (not the installer).
In any event if there is even a little minor corruption will prevent an update.
I noted from above information if you were using X.4.11 I would tell you to ...
I say that because I don't have OSX.5 installed and have no idea how it works. So you can take the advice with a grain of salt.

Re: Running Optimize causes Adobe 8 Pro to hangup
You're going to need to download the 8.1.0 patch from adobe.com/downloads/updates. Once you manually install that, it should repair the updater and you can update the rest of the way to 8.1.2 (or you could download the 8.1.1 and 8.1.2 patches and install them manually as well, it shouldn't matter). Hopefully there is a fix for your problem in the latest version since that is the first officially supported version of Acrobat 8 on Mac OS 10.5
