Running Solaris in a quiet environment
I need to configure my Ultrasparc-10/Solaris 8 system to NOT make
any noise under any conditions. I mean no beeps, no flash audio,
nothing. And it has to be permanent across reboots, upgrades,
patches, and other users that may log in on it.
Anything short of snipping wires will be considered, but it has to
be equally reliable. Headset sound-only is OK if it can be guaranteed.

Removing a wire from a speaker is probably quite possible without
snipping the wire. Push on terminals are normally used - I've never
looked inside a U10 though.

Sorry to disappoint, but it's not for espionage, or recording studio,
or concert hall, but just densely populated cubicles where an
uninterruptable beepfest from accidentally catting a binary file is
NOT appreciated, nor browsing some site that thinks they're making
a movie.
Fan noise and hard disk noise we're just going to have to live with.

package. Keyboard beeps are another issue. You could try
setting the audible bell to the visible bell in the terminfo
files. Some beeps, like at boot time, may be unavoidable
though.
You could try an acoustic hood or some simple baffling. Heat> Fan noise and hard disk noise we're just going to have to live with.
may become a problem though. Consider locating the systems under
the desk.
