Safari and FW Popup Menu (fw_menu.js)

Ask a Question related to Macromedia Fireworks, Design and Development.

Default Safari and FW Popup Menu (fw_menu.js)

Sub-menus from the fw_menu.js script popup menus do not appear to be working
in Mac OSX Safari browser. Any one else noticed this? Anyone found a fix?

The primary menu works fine in Safari. It is just sub-menus which seem to
have a problem.

Note: I have adapted my special version of fw_menu.js which allows the popup
menus to position themselves relative to the trigger. The new version should
now do the proper positioning with all khtml based browsers (Safari,
Konqueror, etc.)

If you use my version, you may wish to pick up a new one at:
http://www.holtenwood.bc.ca/test/popup.htm

I will officially release this new version as soon as I know more about the
Safari sub-menu problem. But if you would like to pick up a copy which at
least does the right relative positioning, you may do so at the link above.

At least it works except for submenus as mentioned above. But this appears
to be a problem with the original version as distributed by Macromedia also.

Timothy:

You are very brave indeed. Even after your adaptation you are left with a
very bulky menu system that cannot be managed with DW, cannot be spidered by
Search engines, and cannot pass accessability requirements. Why anyone
would want to use it is beyond me. Or have you changed any of that?

Default Re: Safari and FW Popup Menu (fw_menu.js)

I've gone a different direction on most of my new sites. But I still have
sites written with the old popup menu script. And other people still use it.
So I need to maintain it.

One of these days I will get time to redesign the old sites... (ha ha).

Yes it is bulky.

I would never have a site, old or new, which did not have a crawler page to
ensure all crawlers could get to all important pages. No matter what type of
scripting, rollovers, intelligent links, CGI's, or what have you I might
have elsewhere. Although most of the spiders have gotten better at
navigating all the fancy crap, I still don't trust it. I always give them an
easy way.

Ditto accessibility. Although the fancy junk is there for most people, I
always have a way for even a text only (large print, etc.) browser to find
the important information.

PS: What would you recommend as a DW based replacement for the FW popup
menus? Preferably something which can be made to look and behave somewhat
similarly? I would prefer not to have to go back to clients and have them
approve a whole new design. Better to just fix it without too much change.

(Unless of course I can convince them Change Is Good and their site needs a
complete face-lift. And of course assuming they have piles of spare cash to
pay me to do it...)

Timothy--

Working fine for me in Safari 1.0 (v85). Flyouts for sub-menus appear
and links go to your test pages.

Similar issue as with Mozilla based browsers in that no "hand" appears
when over the menu item, but the menu functions otherwise.

I really like ypSlideOutMenus
(http://www.youngpup.net/?request=/components/ypSlideOutMenus.xml).

They work in nearly every browser/os on the planet, they are very smooth,
and the code is only 5k. They are really easy to set up (though there is no
GUI or DW extension). This menu system is used on a ton of large/well-known
sites as well (www.Quark.com, www.Mediatemple.net, etc.).

I can not say enough about the YoungPup set of scripts.

On a side note; I really recommend everyone check out the article on making
pop-up windows
(http://www.youngpup.net/?request=/articles/how-to-create-popups.xml). It
will really save you time and make your site more compatible with all
browsers/os's/web users.

I often recommend those myself. But they are not for people unaccustomed to
