    Place another reference to the same GIF alongside the old one. Repeat as
    necessary, and pretty soon it's a rare GIF indeed that animates!

    Yes, use PithHelmet. It kills ads as well. Absolutely brillant.

    Thanks. It _is_ a nice program. However, in the ReadMe, the author says
    that he has reason to believe that Apple is going to include an
    "unanimator" soon so he decided to put it on hold.

    Most animated GIFs are advertising. PithHelmet removes most of that. So
    yes, technically it doesn't de-animate GIFs (by having them loop only
    once or showing only the first frame). It doesn't show them at all.
