    Default Save As files disappear

I am running Illustrator 10 on Panther 10.3.3, older G4 - 450 MHz. Memory 640. I am recently upgraded to Panther. When in Illustrator, if I select a file in the Open Pane, and resave it to a new name to my hard drive, most of the time everything is fine. But I have experience a few times where the file completely disappears. I can have this file open all afternoon, working on it, saving a long the way, have it in the Dock etc.. Then do the final save and close it - gone! I have done a file search, blink real hard but it is not any where. A terrible feeling to say the least. Today it happen again after making a pdf of the file to send to a client. Luckly I have the pdf, which I can reopen it Illustrator. But this is not right.

I have been using Illustrator since the first version released, but never seen this before. Has any experienced this too?

    thanks

It could be that content package thing. Try a search on that, since I can't remember full details on it.

Or I've read that some people have a problem with files changing names to wierd numbers.

You can try looking those up for now while you're waiting for someone else more knowledgable to join in.

Let me guess, it no longer lets you save the file 'cause it's in use?

It might be there but in the Packages. Either control click or right click on the AI 10 Icon and then go to show packages if you don see it right away look in some of the folders.

To hitpawz question 'Does it no longer let you save the file because it's in use?' A: The file operates normally, allowing saves. It also showed up in the 'Save As' pane when I created a pdf. I am saving directly to my hard drive, not a network.

Thanks Wade Zimmerman, I checked out the Packages, opened every folder - but no luck. I think from now if I am want to duplicate a file, and will no longer 'Save As' in Illustrator, but do it manually in the Finder window - creating a duplicate file there. But like I said, I have never experienced this before. Not a good feeling.

I don't suppose you're adding a period to the beginning of the filenames of your duped files? Filenames beginning with a period are "invisible" in the finder. Some apps show them in open/save,others don't.

When you tried finding them, did you use the simple "find" from a finder window, or did you use the Find command (Comm-F) ... the latter will let you search for invisible files.
