Save to version 10 from CS
Is this possible. I am trying to obtain a client file which was created in CS and I am using 10. Isn't there a way to save to an earlier version as you can do in previous versions?

Yes it is possible.
From Illustrator CS go to File Menu > Export > Choose from the Format pop up menu "Illustrator Legacy(ai)" then select the Illustrator version you wish to save your file in.
