saving eps without extension
I have very specific reasons for needing to save eps documents without the extension (to do with an automated importing system). Illustrator CS won't let me do it. Any way to get around this? Same problem with saving pdfs in acrobat btw.

If you're using OSX, just check the "Hide extension" box. Not sure
about OS9, as it's SO long since I used it. Does Illustrator CS still
run under OS9? Not sure about Acrobat.

Illustrator CS only runs under Mac OS X.

It doesn't work. Gives me an extension whatever I do. Same with Acrobat. Photoshop works fine. Illustrator 10 worked fine.
Not sure about OS9,
Whats an OS9? Oh, yes. I remember now.

Shut up, I love that system!
Just kidding, but I'm pretty good at troubleshooting it. But now I'm going to have to start all over with OSX. Major bummer.

Re: saving eps without extension
I was under the impression that OSX always includes the file extension. It can be "hidden" (as on Windows) but's always there, isn't it?

Re: saving eps without extension
Select "Show all file extensions" in the Advanced pane of the Finder's preferences.

Re: saving eps without extension
The problem is that he wants to save without the file extension existing at all, whether visible or not. Isn't that impossible on OSX?

Re: saving eps without extension
I have "Show all file extensions" in Finder selected because I DON'T want extensions ever to be hidden if they are really there.
I want them to be not there at all under certain conditions. Most OSX apps let me do this. Illustrator CS and Acrobat 6 don't.

Re: saving eps without extension
I hadn't noticed it before, but CS and Acrobat 6 do seem to be determined to give you a filename extension whether you want it or not. I suppose saving to a folder with an AppleScript attached that will strip off the extension could give you what you need.
If Adobe has an explanation for this behavior, I'd like to hear it.

Re: saving eps without extension
It's quite simple. It's because both Mac OS X and Windows want you to use file extensions. For Mac OX, Apple recommends strongly adding file extensions so all the developers now do it.
There are applications (or you can use scripting) to batch rename files. Do a search on versiontracker.com.

Re: saving eps without extension
I understand why it's a good idea to use them with OS X and why it is necessary with Windows. What I don't understand is the assumption that they must ALWAYS be used and that the user must be protected from their own incompetence by inflexible software design.

Steve: "It's quite simple. It's because both Mac OS X and Windows want you to use file extensions. For Mac OX, Apple recommends strongly adding file extensions so all the developers now do it. "
Theres a strong difference of opinion in the Mac community and within Apple itself on this issue. I suspect some ex-nexties wrote the "strong recommendations".
In any case I checked out my alternative ad-building apps: MultiAd Creator, Freehand, InDesign. None of them force you to save with extensions. I don't think it was the intent with Illustrator either since the "save as" dialog gives you the option to hide the extension. Its just that the option doesn't work.
But I guess if this is Adobes policy then Photoshop and InDesign will probably be "fixed" at some point.
