Default saving Illustrator 9 with a transparency

For some reason when I save the Illustrator doc I'm working on that has a transparent box in it, the type all becomes outline and various parts of objects I have in the file break up into segments. I have no idea why. When I went back in to make some changes I had to start all over. Why is this happening? I'm using Mac OS 9.2 and Illustrator 9, but I'm saving the files as Illustrator 6. Could saving as 6 be the problem?

but I'm saving the files as Illustrator 6.

    There is your answer. :)

Illustrator 9 is the 1st version of Illustrator that supports transparency. (other than clipping paths) Backsaving does exactly what you are posting.
