saving illustrator for the web
Hi,
I have some complex illustrator artwork that I want to save for the web. I think GIF files are the best choice for the job and I can create them directly with my illustrator 10 by choosing 'save for the web'. However all the artwork that falls outside the illustrator artboard is included in the gif file. Is there a solution within illustrator to deal with this or do I have to via Photoshop>crop the artwork and optimaze the GIF with Image Ready?
thanx
Alfonzo
PS: Any suggestions on saving illustrator artwork for the web are welcome

I get that problem too, even when using masks. I expost a PSD or open the AI file in Photoshop and Save-For-Web from PS.

Re: saving illustrator for the web
Alfonzo and Scott,
Save for web grabs everything visible in the work area, just as CtrlA does.
If you can select the other things and lift them off the work area with CtrlX, you may save for web and put them back on again.
Otherwise, you may select the part in question and copy it to a layer by itself, hide all other layers, and save for web; after that you can delete the layer (or just hide it) and show everything again.
In either case you are back to your workflow afterwards.

Make a rectangle over the area you want to export, go to objects, crop
area, make, and you wil only export whats inside the rectangle..

Re: saving illustrator for the web
Poul, thank you for sharing the exquisite crop option for Save for web; I did not know it.
I always make objects to be saved for web in full, in a layer of their own, so I just hide the other layers; and afterwards I have a separate copy of exactly what I saved.
Alfonzo and Scott, just do as Pouls says.

Re: saving illustrator for the web
thanx indeed, it even works for "save as pdf" which had the same problem of putting ALL artwork in the PDF file

Re: saving illustrator for the web
Select the object in question, Object>Slice>Clip to Artboard and then Object>Slice>Make.

Re: saving illustrator for the web
On second thoughts, it seems you may not need Object>Slice>Make since your complex artwork is just one piece altogether. Slices are useful if you have many different pieces of artwork and you want to save each in a different format (eg., gif for logos & illustrations, jpeg for photographs, etc.). You can then create a slice for each, select that slice in the Save for Web dialog box & choose the format & other settings.
