    Default Saving IN Illustrator CS

When you save an Illustrator CS .ai file you are given the option to do a couple of things i never noticed in the past....

    1. Create a PDF compatible file.
    2. Use Compression.

My question is related to the Use Compression option... using compression results in a .ai file that is approximately 33% percent the size of an uncompressed file. According to Adobe the only sacrifice for using compression is the time to save the file increases significantly, and as a default compression is check on. BUT IS DOES THIS COMPRESSION RESULT IN ANY LOSS OF IMAGE QUALITY OR EDITABILITY. IS IT LOSSLESS COMPRESSION. WHAT IS THE DOWN SIDE TO USING COMPRESSION (BEYOND THE INCREASE IN TIME TO SAVE THE FILE?) WHAT ABOUT EMBEDDED IMAGES, IF YOU ARE OUTPUTTING A FINAL PROOF WITH PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS BUILT IN?

    PLEASE HELP!!!

    sincerely
    Han

PS also, what are the advantages of creating a PDF compatible file?

Creating a PDF compatible file will allow the file to be opened in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader. The compression is the same as used by Acrobat when saving a PDF file. The only real problem is if you get an error message you cannot edit the Postscript directly.

    Brian,

Perhaps you have a corrupted font. Try changing to a different font, and try again.

I did a "save as" in CS to save it as an older version of Illustrator, (like Illustrator 9) and It did not give me the option to do that. Is that just how it is or am I missing something?

Vector art saved as PDF is lossless. Raster art saved to PDF is lossy, depending on the compression settings you use when saving it.

Laurie - You can no longer "save as" an older version of Illustrator. In CS, you Export to Legacy format.
