    Default Saving my Illustration

I'm using Adobi Illustrator 9.0 on windows 2000. When I save my artwork I've noticed that the files are huge anywhere from 9,000 kb 35,000kb. WHY?

The artwork is very simple. It is a page sized black and white line drawing that I have created, some text and a 3x3 black and white placed photo. Similar artwork that I've created saves at 350kb. I've tried to change the DPI to 300, flattened the image and converted color to gray scale. This helps but the files are still big and it converts my text to outlines and the artwork isn't as crisp. My system administrator is getting upset that I'm slowing down the network with several files that average 35,000kb. What am I doing wrong?

    James,

I am using Illustrator CS but I think the same applies to version 9:
All Graphic Styles, Swatches, Brushes, Symbols are saved with the file even if they are not used.
Simply delete those and the file size will be very much smaller.
I did a test; I put one rectangle on a A4 page and saved the file: 499894 bytes. Then I deleted all those unused items and resaved the file: 58192 bytes...
I am not sure why your files are indeed huge but I think the above will help anyway.

    Hi Ronald,

How do I delete styles. I opened each up and tossed them in the little trash can. I checked my new saved file and it went from 1,000kb to 17,000 kb.

    Hi James,

I can't remember version 9 but in CS there is a "Select All Unused" in the palette menu (and in those other palettes as well) and then of course click the little trash can.

You say your new saved file went UP to 17000 Kb after deleting the styles! <scratching head>
I hope more knowledgeable people than me will help us out here...
