Saving Problems with Illustrator CS!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously,
I am not sure that I have ever had so many nit picks about one single program more than I do about Ill CS. But this one is simply the WORST. Even worse than the fact that picking fonts is as tedious as sifting through a pool of thumbtacks for a paperclip. Even worse than the fact that there is no ARRANGE palette to quickly send things forward and backward. Even worse than the fact that when saving as ANYTHING other than an AI document, the image is usually clipped, off center, or even possessing added white space. Sigh. This is the worst.
I open up a 17 x 11 inch document. I add in a whole bunch of content. I save in AI format. I come back later, open the document, and add in some more content (you know, how a normal graphic designer would open a file adn work on it for a second time), and then try to save. Save asks me a name. I choose the same file. Save bar progress trudges right along. 90%, 100%, done! BAM! Error: The file is either read-only or in use by another person or program. Most amazing thing is: Not only did it NOT SAVE, but it lets you close down Illustrator without asking to save the now UNSAVED document.
I am willing to believe that it is my stupid self that is causing this. Because I cannot believe that with how expensive Illustrator is and how reputable the Adobe company seems to be, that this problem exists for me on both my work and home PCs.
Please someone help me.
Jason
PS - The other issues are side points. They suck, but they aren't project halters.

Re: Saving Problems with Illustrator CS!!!!!!!!!!
And just as an FYI:
I and NOT on a network. I do not have multiple users on my PC. I have read the item below about this very same issue and it wasn't resolved. The files I am using do in fact have jpegs that I have dragged into the document to use in the layout. But I would hardly consider them "in use". Also, I too feel that a program that requires you to reboot your entire machinea dn not even be able to save a document to itself while working on it certainly begins to label itself as a time waster, rather than a time saver.
Please tell me I am saving with some terrible option enabled or something.
Thanks guys,
Jay

Re: Saving Problems with Illustrator CS!!!!!!!!!!
Jason,
Where is your problem with finding a font? On the menu bar, TYPE will give you not only the list of available fonts, but will give you their looks in doing so, or Window/Type/Character will, as always, give you the plain vanilla list of fonts for your choice. How would you like to see the available fonts?
Use of macro keys (SHFT CNTL ], CNTL ], CNTL [, SHFT CNTL [) is the fastest way to move objects forward or back in Arrange positions.
What formats are giving you the unwanted white space (raster I'd guess) and how are you establishing that images boundaries? Are you puting a no stroke rectangle around the image objects as you'd like them to center with?
Are you saving your files to a CD or DVD? If so, remember that ALL files coming from a CD/DVD (even copied to hard drive) automatically are READ ONLY and you'd have to change the attribute to remove Read Only limitation. If you are having the File is in use by another user, (this is a Windows XP thing for the most part) you may need to go into your Documents and Settings and personal Local Settings and delete everything in your TEMP folder (with Illustrator closed). You should do this on a fairly regular basis with XP along with your scheduled Defrag of working and caching hard drives.
See if those things help you. But I've not seen any of those problems on my system. I run XP HE. Remember that if you are running XP Pro the user should have full administrative rights for full functioning of Illustrator. Pro limits individual users from many functions of many programs, especially from Adobe.

Re: Saving Problems with Illustrator CS!!!!!!!!!!
I'm also having this save issue. Which is related (an more annoying than) the fact that I cannot rename the files either when in the windows explorer.
Here are my error messages...
Error Re-naming File or Folder
X Cannot rename fileName: It is being used by another person or program.
Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.
Adobe Illustrator
The file may be read-only, or another user may have it open. Please save the document with different name or in a different folder.
Please not that nothing major is open, especially not illustrator, and this only happens with illustrator CS files, and this has happened both on the network and on my local hard drive.
Help.

Re: Saving Problems with Illustrator CS!!!!!!!!!!
Stephen,
This is usually associated with files being left in your Temp folder. Go to your TEMP folder (if using XP or Win2000, then be sure it's your username TEMP folder and delete ALL files. If you also get that message when trying to delete files, then close Windows and then again go to TEMP folder and delete all files. Now see if that doesn't fix Illustrator's problem.

Re: Saving Problems with Illustrator CS!!!!!!!!!!
Bob,
I appreciate your response, but let's not let this topic die because someone suggested to delete the temp files. That is simply not even close to the real issue at hand. In doing further research, I have found that the times when Illustrator does this is when you import or place a JPEG or other file into an AI file. When you try to save, it looks like it's saving, but then errors out, NOT saving the file. You then have to save as a different file name. Then you have to reboot, to free up access to those JPEG files/AI files in question. Deleting your cache files int he temp fodler does not work because you can't delete the ones having to do with Illustrator because they are still "in use". This is a big pain in the neck.
Fonts are listed in many places in illustrator. The place most go to is the Type Menu of course. But when you have over 1300 fonts, you don't want to have to scroll through everyone of them looking for the T's. The Paragraph and Character box sucks because it doesn't show the font preview. So you either have a useful drop down box or you have a preview, but not both.
The macro keys will have to do for now, which is what I am currently using, but I would think it's not that hard to include a palette menu for it.
The white space I am referring to is when you have an AI doc that you then save as a jpeg or psd or whatever and when you open the file in another program, there seems to be NO indication that the file was cropped properly. I have white space on the left or right side adn the file is cut to deeply on the opposite side or something along those lines.
Very odd.

Re: Saving Problems with Illustrator CS!!!!!!!!!!
Jason,
Sorry, but are you talking about Illustrator CS? You should be able to Place a JPEG or other type of file and either save as a fresh document or edit Place and Save without a problem. (just again tested on my machine and works well without a problem.)
You should NOT have more than 100-150 actively installed fonts on your system or you may well have resource problems and if you have 1300 fonts, this should be handled with an external font manager (either something like ATM Deluxe or Bitream's Font Reserve) so all but immediate font needs are active and this can be done with a click of custom font sets. To select a font that's name starts with "T", just click the font menu and click the "T" key and it'll skip directly to the first font beginning with "T". There are only two places in Illustrator where available Fonts are listed and that's the menu bar (Type\Fonts) and Character Palette (Window\Type\Character) and these will include OpenFace, TT, and PS fonts that are installed and Active.
"The white space I am referring to ". Sorry, but I don't see where you have referred to any white space here. If you create a raster image in Illustrator, it's going to have whitespace as background unless you only included objects which were filled with color and set the bounding box tight with an unfilled, unstroked rectangle.
I'm not sure what any of this has to do with the Save problem of the original post.

Re: Saving Problems with Illustrator CS!!!!!!!!!!
I don't have the saving problem, but I note what you say about TYPE and seeing the fonts in the specific font. this doesn't happen with my new copy of photoshop (part of InDesign). How do I turn it on?

Re: Saving Problems with Illustrator CS!!!!!!!!!!
Cherry,
For the Character Palette in Illustrator or the Font menu option in PhotoShop you need to do it a little differently. Select the menu and you'll note there is a font listed in the font box. Drag across and highlight this fontname, now just type the letter or type in more than one letter or even the whole name and it'll list the font closest to that name from your active list. in that box. Give that a try.

Re: Saving Problems with Illustrator CS!!!!!!!!!!
Cherry,
In Photoshop you can't. Font preview only works in the Type>Font Menu and>>How do I turn it on?<<
there isn't one of those in PS...

Re: Saving Problems with Illustrator CS!!!!!!!!!!
The Character palette in Illustrator won't show examples of the font, but you can go direcly to the font by typing in it's name, or go to the alpha group by typing the first letter after highlighting font name. (same in PhotoShop)

Re: Saving Problems with Illustrator CS!!!!!!!!!!
Jason,
I have also experienced the same error message when trying to re-save a project. I end up with 10 versions of the same document because I am afraid that I will lose my changes if I don't save it under a different name. So frustrating. Also the fonts are so annoying. In PS you can just highlight your text and then go up to the tool options and scroll through to see your text in each font (if your mouse has a scroll button), which is so much more useful than just seeing the name of the font in it's style. Too bad that this does not work in Illustrator.
