Scissor and Knife tool to divide path

Using Illy CS on Win XP, I have a project in which I'm combining to portions
of a vector drawing. The top portion is a male golfer from the waist up, and
the bottom portion is a different golfer from the waist down. Essentially, these are a top horizontal line in a closed path and a bottom horizontal line in a closed path. I want to make the closed path of the top golfer join the closed path of the bottom of the golfer forming one solid outline with no middle 'partition'. Both top and bottom are outlined closed paths done in Illy CS.

I cannot seem to separate the bottom line of the top half of the golfer with the scissors tool. I did separate the segment into two paths as highlighted by the pen tool, and it appears if they are disconnected because I see two different points (left and right).

Anxious to find out how to split the paths.

Several ways. Here's two:

DirectSelect the bottom straight SEGMENT (don't click a point) of the top half. Delete.

DirectSelect the top straight SEGMENT of the bottom half. Delete.

Drag a DirectSelect marquee around the the bottom left endpoint of the top half and the top left endpoint of the bottom half. Join.

Normal select the now single open path. Join. (To close the path).

Or:

Position the two closed paths as desired. DirectSelect one of the bottom or top edge points and use the arrow keys to nudge it a bit "into" the other half. This is just to ensure a bit of overlap.

AltClick the Add Pathfinder button in the Pathfinder Palette.

If I'm reading you properly, you have two paths with you with to make into one. Multi-select both paths (SHIFT click) and then just OBJECT, COMPOUND PATH, MAKE. Now you have one path, although it's not "looped" or closed. To close it use Direct Selection tool and multi select one end point of each open path (multi select points using Direct select drag - marquee or SHIFT click) and OBJECT, PATH, JOIN (Control ] is supposed to be macro key, but it doesn't seem to work for me in CS). Just be sure that only two end points are selected (points will be filled that are selected and white if not).

Once I put on stronger glasses, I do see that the "]" is a "J". See what age does to the eyes<g>. and besides that makes more sense, Instead of trying to remember (which is automatically using J) I used what looked right in the menu. In any case thanks for bringing out the right macro. Gee .. such glee, but as you can tell, Baby probably wouldn't fit and obviously you haven't had enough chicken dinners yet<g>. You should have gone for lobster and filet mignon at least. Rubber chicken coming up, however !
