Scrambled text after converting multiple pages into a single pdf

Hi
After combining 30 single page pdfs into a single document using "Create PDF from multiple pages", the text in the combined pdf is all scrambled.
I tried using both Acrobat Pro 6 and 7 to combine the single pages and the scrambled text occured with both, And I tried viewing the combined pdfs in Reader 6 and it was scrambled.
I created the original single page pdfs and they look fine.
I work with a book publishing company and have used the "Create PDF from multiple pages" feature many times in the past, and never experienced this problem.
Any advice is appreciated.

This sometimes happens if the fonts are embedded as subsets. When you
do this in the future, try to embed the entire font.
