No, there is no such message. I did have a message in /var/log/message

"kernel: scsi: device set offline - not ready or command retry failed
after bus reset: host 0 channel 0 id 0 lun 0"

However, I finally managed to have some time to compile 2.4.21. Now it
works smoothly.
