create a pdf with acrobat pro 7.x
properties show 'no security' = everything is allowed
so thats good because I want readers to be able to add comments
    save the file
    quit pro

    open pdf with reader 7.x
go to properties half the stuff has security applied!!!!
    readers cannot add comments :(:(
    i'm very cross ...

all this is on the same machine
    dual g5 mac

Are you sure you checked the Help file? You should have come across an option to Enable for Commenting in Adobe Reader

    Tony,

    I feel your pain.

All I want to do is highlight stuff in PDFs I've created. No interest in security protection. Just the electronic equivalent of a yellow (or whatever color) highlighter.

So, since I couldn't get anything happening on the Mac side... I downloaded the tryout version of Acrobat Pro v8 for Windows (I couldn't find a tryout for Mac OS X of the latest Acrobat Pro). Started a new document. Set it for no security... Everything in the list shows up as allowed (including commenting). Great. Saved it.

Opened it up on the Mac (Acrobat Reader v8)... Sure as s__t commenting (and a couple of other items) "not allowed." Ugh.

How very, very frustrating. Why must this thing default to not allow commenting on documents with "No Security"? Why do I have a sinking feeling it comes down to somebody trying to sell me something. Thing is, I'll buy it! I downloaded the tryout Pro version (for Windows no less) because if it works... I'm willing to buy, but it doesn't seem to.

Posting to commiserate and see if anyone has figured this infuriation out. I find it hard to believe we're the only two experiencing this problem... but I've done a lot of searching too. If PDF Pen weren't so darn slow opening large files, I'd be done... it does exactly what I need (for free no less).

Allowing something in a pdf does not equal to applying rights to a pdf.

In order for a Reader user to add comments you need to rights-enable the pdf. Again this is not done by setting standard security settings, but as Mark indicated done via the enabling pdf for commenting feature in Acrobat 7 and 8 pro.

version 7> go to document> Enable for commenting... (last item in the menu

version 8> go to comments> Enable for commenting..(near the middle of the drop down menu)

save the PDF after doing this, then open in the reader and you should be able to add comments to this PDF.
