Default Selecting certain parts of an object in an arc

In Illustrator 10 I've created a line drawing--stroke only--of an arc shaped window treatment--a fabric covered pole which has a gathered look to it. It calls for it to be in two different widths (thicknesses). I would like to be able with the Direct Selection tool to select all the points on the top part of this object and stretch them. But the DS tool only selects in a block shape forcing me to do a bunch of shift-selecting. Is there a tool in Illustrator like Photoshop's lasso that can select freely?
