Default Server: Msg 8525, ...Distributed transaction...

I have a trigger that updates some remote servers via
dynamic sql (sp_executesql) and linked servers. I get the
    following error:

    Server: Msg 8525, Level 16, State 1, Line 3
Distributed transaction completed. Either enlist this
session in a new transaction or the NULL transaction.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: Unspecified error]

All permissions are OK, etc, and the update statement
    works.

    (1) When update statements are run
    a. outside of the trigger in a stored proc from Query
    yzer
    b. in the same security context as triggered the
    trigger
    c. and IF I don't begin a transaction before running
    the proc.

    (2) When the remote user to which the local user is
mapped via linked servers is a member of the Sql server
    sysadmin fixed server role.

I am trying to use this as a kind of remote cascading
update in lieu of cascading RI.

Have you tried BEGIN DISTRIBUTED TRANSACTION instead to see if that behaves
    differently?
