server side transcoding of mpegs, qt - Macromedia Flash Flashcom

does FMS allow you to do server side transcoding of mpeg or qt to .flv? Is the Flix Engine the most common way to do this? I'll be using it on a linux box....

FMS doesn't do file conversions. You'll need to use a third party program, and
you're on the right track with Flix Engine... sort of. I evaluated Flix Engine
late last year, and I can't say I was happy with the performance. It did
alright with most .mov files, but it had inconsisitent results with avi's and
failed to convert most mpeg files, even with the proper codecs on the machine.
I was evaluating on a Windows server, so I don't know if Linux performance is
better.

You might want to have a look at ffmpeg (http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net) before
you make the decision to go with a proprietary solution.

Regardless of what program you employ to handle the conversion, you're going
to need an application server (php, asp, cf, etc) on the server to facilitate
the file upload (if an upload is required) and the call to the conversion
program.
