Service specific error 2 (0x2)
Hey CF guru's, need a hand -
New Dell server runing Win2003, just downloaded CFMX7 30 day trial. I have
spent over 2 weeks getting this to run correctly. Uninstalled, reinstalled on
different machines, same issue. Also have installed CFMX updater. Here are the
error logs it throws:

Any ideas what is causing this? I have read the articles on changing the heap
sizes and I have been trying to tweak that, with no avail.

When are these errors occuring? What are you doing at the time? Do certain things work and others don't?

Thank you so much for your post. Its when I try to start the Cold Fusion
service. The ODBC agent and the ODBC Server are running, along with IIS and
its sub components. So when I click START service on CF this is exactly what
happens:
Service throws this error:
Windows could not start the Coldfusion MX 7 Application Server on Local
Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a
non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to
service-specific error code 2.

Re: Service specific error 2 (0x2)
Out of curiosity ... do you have any datasources named "service"?

Re: Service specific error 2 (0x2)
Right, was just checking as having a datasource with that name can cause your
error.
Try starting CF from the command line from within c:\cfusionmx7\runtime\bin,
using:
jrunsvc.exe -starttimeout 900 "ColdFusion MX 7 Application Server"
Let me know what you get here.

Re: Service specific error 2 (0x2)
The failure you're seeing is that of the XML parser. Can you post your jvm.args?

Re: Service specific error 2 (0x2)
I'm getting the same error after I installed the CF 7.01 updater and it's
driving me crazy. My JVM in JRun was dated 11/30/2005 when I ran the updater.
I looked through all the args and they matched up. I'm not overly experienced
with it, but nothing looked like a problem to me.
When I run c:\cfusionmx7\runtime\bin, using:
jrunsvc.exe -starttimeout 900 "ColdFusion MX 7 Application Server" the error
msg I get is:
"Cannot find c:\cfusionmx7\runtime\bin" which is ludicrous- the file is there
and I'm using it. I can even enter the subdirectory and run the file on the
command line within that directory and I still get the message.
Could it be a weird windows permissions issue caused by the updater?
thanks for anything, Don

Re: Service specific error 2 (0x2)
Did you rebuild the machine since getting it from Dell? I'm using Dell servers,
W2003, IIS6, but I installed and setup the OS myself and have not had any kind
of problems at all on multiple servers. If you've got the default OS install on
yours, there might be some Dell specific security configuration that is
preventing the install from succeeding. I even built a test machine with WinXP
Prof last week and installed the developers version and it works fine.
Are you doing a stand-alone or multi-server install? Did you by any chance
change the credentials the service runs under in the Services MMC? I run mine
under a domain account so it can get to network resources and the account has
to have "run as a service" rights and must be in the Local Administrators group.

Re: Service specific error 2 (0x2)
You are going to need to uninstall, reboot and then clean EVERYTHING
out of your temp file that can be deleted before re-installing.

Re: Service specific error 2 (0x2)
Still working with this issue. We have a fleet of a half dozen laptops and 4-5
desktops used in offline presentations. They are straight from Dell. no
custom modifications are made to the OS whatsoever. No strangely named
datasources are used. They are running Windows XP and are updated weekly. The
laptops are running McAfee security. The desktops are running Windows
Firewall. Both box types run CFMX 6.1 with zero problems. I discovered this
error in September 2005 and reported it to Macromedia. In November I spent
three days on this task, documenting settings and reinstalling. It never
worked. I determined the cheapest thing for us to do was let Team Macromedia
or the company solve the problem and release an update. 6 months later we're
still waiting and people are still posting this same issue to the forums. Our
clients will purchase the CF 7 licenses after positive response to these laptop
demos. Until I have CF7 license keys then it seems I can't get real support on
this one. Catch 22. Regardless, this problem is well-documented on the
forums, yet Team Macromedia hasn't successfully responded to it and often times
the fourth or fifth reply still wants another person's logs...
I have followed every suggestion that was posted as of November 2005- none
worked- and will now review posts made since then.
It's intriguing that it may be a dell issue because we have a complete dell
fleet here.
In July I did identify issues with running coldfusion and McAfee identity
theft or whatever that product was. That McAffee product is disabled and was
never installed on the desktops.
I am a 10 year CF veteran who now needs a plug-and-play tool for his team.

Re: Service specific error 2 (0x2)
First, check that the prots are not being blocked by a server security policy.
Second, try changing the username that the service uses to log on.
