Default session variable blocked at desktop

I'm sure this has been covered, but I didn't see it in the archives.
I have some desktops not recognizing session variables and causing the script
to stop. It seems that on one desktop, I opened .cfm in norton AV and it
helped. Another desktop has no antivirus or other filters, but does have xp
firewall. I turned off the firewall and still when I get to the first session
variable, I get an error message.
This has happend at two different sites.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.
