Default Shared Assets list doesn't like .PNG file initially

This one stumped me for a while, until I stumbled across the workaround:

    scenario:
I found then when I opened the Shared Assets list while editing a role, I was
always being prompted to "open, save or cancel" the first item in that list,
and that the preview of the image didn't appear.

I tried all the options, but nothing would stop this dialog opening, until I
noticed that this only happened when a .PNG file was the first in the list.

I also found that if I went through the list only selecting .PNG files I was
again given the prompt to "open, save or cancel"; that was until i clicked a
..GIF or .JPG file which didn't show this prompt and did show it's preview
successfully, and then after viewing my .GIF or .JPG there was no prompt for a
..PNG and it's preview worked fine.

    workaround:
So, if the first thing I click on is a .GIF or .JPG and after that .PNGs work
fine... I guess I need to add a .GIF to the top of my list, right? Indeed! so,
I created a new asset that points to a generic .GIF image (20x200 graphic
saying "Shared Assets" <g>) and I have it the name "_Shared Assets".

Now when my list opened the .GIF is automatically selected and previewed, and
this allows all my .PNG files to preview properly with no prompts

Sounds strange, but its not reproducible on my machine ! Can you send accross the png to me ?

What happens if you say 'save' ? Does this continue to pop up ?
