SHARED REVIEW ACROBAT 8 PROFESSIONAL
I would like to understand the file creation that happens when initiating a shared review. The pdf that is to be in the Review is coming from a webDAV server where it is stored for future commenting and I want that file to build up all comments as it is put in and out of a Shared Review session as they are needed thereby creating a Review History. But when I send for Shared Review, it seems to create a new file with "_Review" tacked on the end of the filename. How can I set it up so that it is using the file I originally opened (like when I used Browser Based Review in Acrobat 7)?
I realize that a new folder is created somewhere on the server to contain the .fdf files for each reviewer, but won't it let me set the file being reviewed to be the actual file and not a copy?

That's not the way it works. I don't think you can do that.
For more insight about the Shared Review process, look at this link:

Re: SHARED REVIEW ACROBAT 8 PROFESSIONAL
How does it work then?
How about this. . .
Can a file be held in shared review indefinitely?
Let me give you a little detail. I am working with Vitamin Labels. Each label is it's own file made into a Master PDF with the source quark file attached and a Review PDF.
What I have set up is a web based Content and Management System where I want reviewers to be able to access and comment on the Review PDF files at any time. I am wrestling with having reviewers transfer the review PDF into a folder called "comments" or "with Revisions" or if I should have these "review" files be contained in a review session indefinitely.
Just want to ask if you think that's a valid way to go?
Thanks so much,
Karen

Re: SHARED REVIEW ACROBAT 8 PROFESSIONAL
The shared review wizard creates a new PDF because it needs to embed the URL to the comment repository into the original PDF - the wizard basically creates a "shared review enabled PDF". Since the URL is embedded in the file anyone opening the file (from any location) will be able to participate in the review and make comments (assuming the have the correct access prvileges). Because of this, the filename and location of the shared review enabled PDF can be anything and anywhere. This enabled version of the file will be in a shared review indefinitely. You can use the "Save as Archive Copy" under the file menu to remove the URL and shared review logic (the comments stay in the file)
Hope this helps

Re: SHARED REVIEW ACROBAT 8 PROFESSIONAL
so, if i am keeping all of my review pdfs on the webDAV server where I specifying the Shared Review to take place, then I should probably set all of my files up to be in constant shared review status?
Also, is there any way to set up notification of a comment added to a particular file so that I am apprised of changes for that file? It seems to say so, but yet, you still have to open the file to see the notification.
Thanks so much,
Karen

Re: SHARED REVIEW ACROBAT 8 PROFESSIONAL
The files can only be setup to be in a constant shared review. Putting the files in the shared review location alone won't make them shared review enabled - only the wizard can do that.
Unfortunately Acrobat on the Mac doesn't support notifications at the system level. Acrobat on Windows does provide a system tray level notification for new comments. On Mac you need to open the Review Tracker to see the updates or the specific file.

Re: SHARED REVIEW ACROBAT 8 PROFESSIONAL
Just one more batch of questions. . . thank you, btw, for all your help in understanding the difference here between the shared and browser-based.
The folder I have set up on the webDAV server for the review repository contains the actual files as well. So, say I let the shared review wizard put that "_Review"extension on the filename--I now have 2 files in the same location. . .what happens to that extra file when comments are done being made and I revome it from review? Do I have to go in and consolidate that file with the original file so it contains all the comments?
My problem is that I want to keep an historical archive of all comments that are made over time as we make new revisions to each label that I work on and I'm afraid if I let it add that extension, then end the review that I'll have the extra work of consolidating the two files OR deleting the original file and removing the "_Review"extension to the file that was in review.
Or is it safe to say that I could not let it add that extension to the filename and leave the actual file named as is thereby saving some work?
Still, I would like to know though, what happens when the review is removed from the tracker? Does the file still contain the embedded URL? How would I go about removing that when the file is not in review?
Thank you again so much for your time on this!
Happy Thanksgiving!

The shared review enabled file can never be removed from the review. The review is burned into the file. Opening it will always put you into the review.

Since users are accessing the file from a web browser the comments are never stored in the "_Review" file. When the review is finished I would "Save an Archive Copy" and overwrite the original file. This will create a copy of the file with all of the comments in it and it will not be part of the shared review. You can delete the "_Review" from the server to end the review.
Deleting the review from the tracker doesn't effect the "_Review" file. It also doesn't delete the comment files from the server. Opening the "_Review" again will just make the info reappear in tracker. In 8.0 there is no explicit "end of review" action in the product.
Think of it this way - the "_Review" file is simply an invitation to the review. Opening it will put you in the review no matter what is in tracker or where the "_Review" file is located.
I hope that makes sense

Re: SHARED REVIEW ACROBAT 8 PROFESSIONAL
I am trying to understand how shared reviews work when using SharePoint. Bear with me...I have a limited undestanding of SharePoint and am just getting started with using shared reviews.
When I specify a Sharepoint Workspace and click Add Folder...should I expect that the folder (which, I assume, will contain the stored comments fpr my PDF file) will show up on a Sharepoint web page or is it just a folder on the server?
Also, is the folder name based on the name of the document used for review? And when the review is over, will I need my SharePoint admin to delete the folder, if I no longer need it?
And finally, if I want to use the email option, "Send a link to the PDF in the message", I also need to specify a network location for the file. Am I correct in assuming that the file should be uploaded to a folder on SharePoint and that I should be using the URL for the file in the "Select a location..." box?
Thanks for any help!

Re: SHARED REVIEW ACROBAT 8 PROFESSIONAL
Are you doing this on a PC? I don't think you can do that from a Mac. Only WebDAV or SMB shares work on a Mac.
You may want to ask this in the Windows forum.
