Shift Option Nightmare
My 'shift' and 'option' keys are arbitrarily ceasing to work in both Photoshop and Illustrator CS. I have read all the other postings on this topic, and as of yet, have found no solution. It's not my keyboard. It's not operator error (I have 10 years experience with this program). I did a clean install of both CS and OS X 10.2.3.
Nothing is working. ADOBE do you care? The constraining property of the shift key is essential to your most important customers, DESIGNERS. This function key is so important that I will continue using good ole Illustrator 9, until this problem is solved.
If anyone can help I would truly appreciate it.

Re: Shift Option Nightmare
Did you repair permissions after the install?
Have you tried creating a new user account with administrator privileges?

Re: Shift Option Nightmare
Dee, I appreciate your response. How do you repair permissions. I am currently on a network. Does that affect my ability to change user privileges?

Re: Shift Option Nightmare
Dee, so far so good. I changed the user privileges for Illustrator and created a new account with full privileges. It seems to be working, but since the problem was 'on again-off again', I should know for sure by tomorrow. Thank you for your guidance. You may hear from me again. :)

Re: Shift Option Nightmare
Good luck with that.
It seems something had corrupted your account. If it happens often, you need to troubleshoot that more closely.

Well, the two keys worked for all of an hour and then stopped. Any other suggestions?

Re: Shift Option Nightmare
Yes I sure did. I ran the repair tool, restarted, and they still aren't working.

Re: Shift Option Nightmare
But if it returns to normal when you create a new user account, then you have something that's making the account corrupt.
Could be anything. I'd start with fonts. Do you have a font manager that will verify fonts? If not you'll have to do it manually like in the link I posted.

Re: Shift Option Nightmare
I am using Font Reserve, which supposedly takes care of corruption. I have about 6000 fonts, so the manual method is pretty much impossible. The keys start working when I restart my computer as well, does that make a difference. I will spend some time with font reserve filters and see if I detect any corruptions.

Re: Shift Option Nightmare
"ADOBE do you care?"
It's not Adobe's problem. It's Apple's.
This is a bug specific to OS X 10.2.x (Jaguar). Since Illustrator 9 would be running in the Classic Environment, it wouldn't be effected by this bug, which only effects native OS X apps (perhaps it's somehow limited to CFM-based Carbon apps, I'm not sure).
Sorry, but I don't recall the exact cause of the behavior (it's been 9 months at least since this issue was being hotly debated in these forums—you might want to dig through some of the archived posts, if they're still around). The bug has something to do with the authentication server invoked when you connect to networked servers. Your experience of things working fine for 2 hours, and then suddenly going bad is exactly the behavior experienced with this bug.
While repairing permissions isn't a bad thing, it's unlikely to resolve this issue. Nor would creating a new user, etc.
If you're only using OS X 10.2.3, you might consider upgrading to the latest version with the latest security updates. Sorry, I don't recall if this bug was ever fixed by the time the 10.2.8 update came out or not, but I don't see how upgrading could hurt at this point.
I'd be almost certain that this Apple bug, if not fixed by the end of Jaguar, has surely been fixed in Panther.
Hope this helps...
