Short Canon EOS Lens Recommendation - Photography

Looking for a short prime or possibly a short zoom, in the range of 20 to 40 mm or thereabouts. I don't care about brand, I do care that it be sharp (e.g. Photodo "4-ish") and not too expensive -- say, $500 or less. Recommendations for vintage "old" lenses to look for on eBay would be good also. New to Canon EOS bodies (long-time Nikon user) and simply can't afford Canon 'L' glass. For that matter, looking for suggestions on where to find good objective and up-to-date Canon lens reviews on the web. rafe b. http://www.terrapinphoto.com...

Well you better care about which brand some Sigmas
do not work on some Canon EOS bodies...
The only Canon EOS lens that fits your criteria is the
    20-35 F3.5-4.5 USM for about $350...
Next level up is the new Canon 17-40 L lens at $800...

That's either the Canon 35/2.0 or 24/2.8. Compact, light, and sharp. (Both
are photodo 3.9 or so, if memory serves.) The fine print in the review book
(see below) indicates that the Canon 28/2.8 is inferior to those two. (If
    you want a sharp 28mm, get a Contax G.)

The 17-40/4.0 zoom would be a lot more fun, though<g>.

There's an annual Japanese publication that gives a half page review of
every AF 35mm SLR lens in current production (and a full page for the
newer/fun lenses). It's a bit perverse in that they test lenses wide open. I
find it great fun while I wait for an affordable and liftable full-frame
    dSLR, although impatience grows...

For the record the ISBN number is: ISBN4-05-603004-9

Many of the Canon short primes fit your requirements for image quality and
    cost. I had the 24 f/2.8, 28 f/2.8, 35 f/2. All are 4 or better photodo I
believe. They were all excellent and cheap. I sold them for between $115 and
$190. They are not USM, but so what. Sharp, light weight, and great bargains.

Another "bargain" option is the older 20-35 f/2.8 L. It is sharper than the
17-28 f/2.8 L and can be had at very good prices ($600). Do not confuse this
with the cheaper 20-35 f/3.5-4 USM, a non-L lens. It is not nearly as good
optically, but still not a bad lens.

Stick with Canon glass. I think it is the best value.

If cost is a major factor, I would use a prime and not a zoom. I have the 20
mm Canon 2.8, a great 'character' lens.

I concur with Dave about the Canon 20mm f/2.8USM, but if it's a zoom you
want, you would be hard-pressed to find a better price / value ration than
    the Tokina 19-35mm AF193.

Well I had two of those, one Nikon and one Canon and I found it really good
for scenic photography when shot at about f/8. It is VERY sharp.

Lisa makes an interesting point about the distortion which is quite
pronounced when shooting vertical and horizontal lines (as well as people
near the edge of the frame), but like you I haven't used many other w/a
    zooms so I can't make a comparison.
