short cuts for cut & drop without loosing shape/size
After I put the rectangle tool around the object, cut and paste onto
another layer the shape is distorted. I need to select, cut and resize
a picture. Simple but I forgot how.

Try Command-J (copy to new layer) or Shift-Command-J (layer via cut).
