is there a shortcut for deleting a text frame while inside it. Looking for something like command-k as in Quark!

No,
define a shortcut to switch to the selection tool, use that and delete.

Presumably when you want a shortcut to delete the frame you are writing in you do not have the hand on the mouse and want to do it with keyboard only.
Defining a shortcut to change from text editing to selection tool is a very good idea anyway. The esc-key is almost perfect for this.
