Re: should i go for coldfusion, asp, or php?
Do you know any of them already? If not CF would be the fastest in getting over
the learning curve. What is your budget? There is no right or wrong answer to
this question, its all personal preference, each of these languages have their
pros and cons, you have to weigh them yourself and make the best decision based
on your needs.

Re: should i go for coldfusion, asp, or php?
Here's a pro-.NET (ASP.NET) page:
http://www.promoteware.com/Module/Article/ArticleView.aspx?id=10
Here's a CF vs PHP comparison, from the CF side:
http://www.web-relevant.com/blogs/cfobjective/index.cfm?mode=entry&entry=C7597E8

C-BDB9-5320-EB50C1461F58460F
What it comes down to, ultimately, is what's your reason for asking the
question? Do you want to do this for a living? If so, pick whatever will put
food on your table. Do you want to do this for fun? If so, pick whatever you
can afford and looks appealing. Do you want to get hired at another company,
and already know which company you'd like to work for? If so, what do they use?
Do you want to have access to a huge assortment of free, sometimes crappy,
tools and premade bits of functionality? What kind of site(s) are you going to
be writing? What's your ultimate goal?
Picking a language isn't as big a deal as learning the underlying techniques
and methodologies for writing good clean code, using the right algorithm for
the task at hand. You can write crappy sites in any technology. You can also
write good sites in any technology. Do you understand HTTP? HTML? CSS? DHTML?
Javascript? AJAX? Understanding the limitations of the distribution mechanism
is a first step towards writing good sites.

Re: should i go for coldfusion, asp, or php?
thanks for your replies. =)
well, the reason why i am asking this is because i am writing a site for my
dad's company. the main funtion for this is so he can manage his orders
online, and access his customer files anywhere anytime.
i know html and all pretty well, just new to this server type of things.
thanks again, i am gonna go read more before i ask another question.
how much do you usually get paid as a web designer?
and how's the job opportunity?
just wondering before i step into this.

coldfusion is not very good for getting the job with is not so much
oppurtunity and far far less than all of others
coldfusion can learn it quick but for basic needs u have u can learn php as
quicker and do more powerful things with it
do not use asp.net as it very complicated from a beginner the same is this
with java/jsp

what you're trying to accomplish you may find that one technology suits
your purposes slightly better than another, but saying PHP is more
powerful than CF as a blanket statement simply isn't true.
Warning: this will probably start of deluge of irrelevant posts from the
forum's native trolls, but false statements like the one above just
can't go unchecked.

Re: should i go for coldfusion, asp, or php?
in the general way i mean is more powerful as has more functions and
libraires to make it strong for the communities and the job finding. i do
not mean it is better than a coldfusion server or coldfusion can not do the
things it will do
coldfusion can do only web things and php can do more than this now, like the
scripting for the os and such. php is powerful for this too, and is why
asp.net adn java are also more powerful than coldfusion with being for more
use all round. coldfusion not full of teh same powerful makes it better in
soem ways as the focuing is on the web
re: this will probably start of deluge of irrelevant posts from the

i perosnally think this is bad attitude to speak of other people who have no
agree with you to call them in this way. if not agree with you they are
'irrelavant' and are the trolls. i was taught that worst way to promote
yourself was to demote or degrade the others, this will only serve to make u
look like insecure or not have mighty case in point.

Re: should i go for coldfusion, asp, or php?
Hey Raymond,
I think you misunderstand here - if we stay withing the scope of web
development, which coldfusion is exclusively used for, I think Matt is saying
that it's not right to say one is more powerful than the other, both has pros
and cons. Yes, asp.net may well be more powerful in many contexts but thats
becasue it uses .net languages and the full range of .net libraries - it is
bound to be more pwerful as it used for so many different kinds of things, not
just web dev. For cf to have that kind of power would be silly - like swatting
a fly with a cruise missile, if you know what I mean.
For example, cf having a lot less language features than , say, C#, actually
may make it more "empowering" and therefore more powerful so here we can mess
with what "powerful" actually means.
I think cf has more disadavnatges than most web dev platforms, but ususally
due to reasons of more concern than it not being powerful enough. I reckon it's
pretty powerful alright - in fact cf and php are pretty much on par with each
other in this regard. cfi smor pwerul in soem ways while php is more powerful
in others.
