Should I wait for kernel 2.6? - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

I'm about to set up a new Linux box. My current install CD is Slackware 7 (kernel 2.2.13), and I'd like to get something more up-to-date. I'm comfortable with Slackware and would like to stay with it unless there's some compelling reason not to. According to Slackware's web site, their latest version is 9.1 (kernel 2.4.xx, 22 IIRC). There's been a lot of talk about 2.6 in various places; presumably it's coming out Real Soon Now. I'm not in a hurry to set up the new box, so my question is: is it worth waiting until a 2.6 release comes ...

I'm about to set up a new Linux box. My current install CD is
Slackware 7 (kernel 2.2.13), and I'd like to get something more
up-to-date. I'm comfortable with Slackware and would like to
stay with it unless there's some compelling reason not to.
According to Slackware's web site, their latest version is 9.1
    (kernel 2.4.xx, 22 IIRC).

There's been a lot of talk about 2.6 in various places; presumably
it's coming out Real Soon Now. I'm not in a hurry to set up the
new box, so my question is: is it worth waiting until a 2.6 release
comes out? Is there anything in 2.6 that makes it a "must-have"
compared to 2.4? Presumably the answer depends on just what features
I need; if it only provides significant improvements to things I
won't be needing, like SMP or RAID, then for me the answer is no.

Can someone give me a quick description of the pros and cons of 2.6,
or point me to a place where I can get such a description?

Why? Can't you just install it on an existing distro? What's your
    problem?

Get the kernel and read his doentation.

Its going to be a while before it makes it in to distros, and I wouldn't
risk a new major kernel version until it was well tested (i.e. there are
about a month or so in between releases of minor versions)

    No

It's out, at www.kernel.org. Benefits include serious improvements in
dealing with very cluttered directories, lots more laptop support, lots more
SMP support, lots more 64-bit hardware support, etc., etc.
