Default Should This Produce Syntax Error?

    Declare TempParam int
Select TempParam EventID from masterEvent where Eventid=1

I was accidentally omitted "=" for statement above and the result as below.

    Eventid
    -----------
    NULL

Shouldn't it say "syntax error" or sort of?

No. In your case, EventID in the column lis is used as an alias name for the
TempParam column, which is NULL for all rows of the masterEvent table. You
get one row only returned because of the Where clause.

I always recommend to use AS, but as you can see :-)
