Default Silly Question of the Day

Hi All from a FW newbie

The answer is probably stareing me right in the face, but I can find it in
any of the preference settings.

How do I change the default File Open location? When I click Open, FW opens
to the (in my case) useless My Pictures folder. This is a major pain because
every time I need to open a file it takes me 12 clicks to navigate from My
Pictures to the network location I'm working from.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

See the little folder icon beside the SAVE AS or Export dialogue box? click
on that and navigate your hard drive.

I hope this helps.

I think you'll find Larry, that FW returns to the last place you saved a
file to and the last place you opened a file from.

Why don't you delete My Pictures? I actually find it quite useful for all
the images I don't have a predetermined place for :)

Thanks Anthony, but I'm not seeing a little folder Icon for either Save As

I deleted My Pictures, and it now opens where I last opened a file. Thank
Peter!

This helps a lot.but I would still like to be able to set a Default
location, as you can do in almost every other (non-Macromedia) software
product.

Hello,

How about when you click on File > Open, you would see Look In: <my
pictures>, click on the arrow pointing downwards...you should be able to
select any location from there. Fireworks will remember that the next time
you do a File > Open

I hope this helps.

When I do this Windows just creates a new one upon restart.

Larry:

After reading through the replies here I think there are TWO more
options you could give a try:

1) Create a Shortcut to your folder where you store your files for a
specific project. Save that shortcut in the folder Fireworks opens in by
default.
2) The second option is an extension written by John Dunning. He has
created an extension made in Flash MX that can be used as a Flash panel
in Fireworks MX. The Extension has almost the same fucntionality as the
Dreamweaver Site Files window. You can download the extension here:
http://johndunning.com/fireworks/dl?Commands

Optionally, you can find all of his other extensions here:
http://johndunning.com/fireworks/

What often happens with me is that when I export a PNG sourcefile,
Fireworks also defaults at this folder when I want to open something.
Aswell as vice versa - it exports where I last saved or opened a file.
Although generally it remember its location with the _notes folders,
this does happen over here...

Hopefully this will add some more help to the advice already given by
Anthony and Peter.

Actually, I spoke too soon. When I started everything up again this morning,
FW still went straight to the My Pictures folder.

I think My Pictures is a Windows System folder and it can't really be
deleted.

Is this whole problem, I mean FW not remembering where it last opened or
saved a file, a BUG!? Surely a $499 solfware product must be designed better
than this!?

Thanks Coen,

I created a shorcut and that is working OK. But this is a second-class
workaround.

Surely FW MX is designed to function better than this! Anyone from MM care
to offer an opinion?
