simple declare question - MySQL

Newbie here coming over from sql server. I'm using mysql query browser and I would like to execute some script I'm not creating a stored procedure (yet) but just testing some sql script like I used to do in sql server query yzer How would I do the following declare var int select total into var from mytable; Like I said its just loose sql script not a stored procedure so I don't understand why I cannot do this, I have tried it in script windows, query windows, with semi colons, without semi colons, etc whats wrong? Thanks...

    Default simple declare question

    declare var int
    select total into var from mytable;

    If I am not very much mistaken, in MySQL you declare variables
    in stored procedures only. You can, however, use temporary variables
    without declaring them. The following should work:

    SET t = (SELECT total FROM mytable);
    SELECT t;

    or use t in any other way that suits you.
