Re: Slicing Images
Tracy:
Here is the overriding principle -
Your page should allow visitors to download engaging content in 10 seconds
or less, or else your "click-through" rate goes up significantly. A
reasonable modem standard to use for this 'idealized visitor' is a 56k
modem, which can practically download about 4K per second. This means that
your page must be about 40-45K in total weight, which includes all code, all
graphics, and all other externally linked files that must be fetched from
the server.
An extension of this idea will lead you to conclude that the critical
consideration is not how many slices you have, but how many images
*altogether* you have on the page (although many slices even in a small
image will slow your page down). The means that creating a large image in
FW, slicing it into pieces and assembling then with FW's HTML, and uploading
the result to the web is a very poor general operating methodology.
So, to answer your question, I am not aware of any way to automatically
slice your page (although there used to be a program called Photowebber, I
am not certain it was commercially successful, or is even still around).
And frankly, even if I were aware of such a method, I probably wouldn't
recommend it because of the consderation mentioned above.
Finally, you can drop your guides and slice along guides, but I suppose
that's not what you are asking about.

Re: Slicing Images
Hi Tracy,
We have a Technote about "Overview of slices and slice issues". This may
help you understand the advantages of "slices" on your document.
