I've successfully used Microsoft Windows Movie Maker on Windows XP -
combining slides and music. See
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/moviemaker/default.asp

Then I use Nero to write a VCD or SVCD which will play on my DVD player.

It's a bit of trial and error to decide what is the best format to save the
"movie" in. But the result is very good.

Paint Shop Photo Album does a nice job, with a choice of formats. You can
download it for a 30-day free trial at http://www.jasc.com/download_4.asp?

Does Paint Shop Photo Album support MPEG-2 compression or just MPEG ? (The
specs don't tell...)

I tried the MySlideShow shareware program which seemed quite okay, but it
only supports MPEG, and I think the image quality was poor. I'm shooting
with a 6.2 megapixel Canon 10D, so it feels kindof sad to scale the images
down to fuzzy MPEG.

Anyone got any experience with this ? Is there software around that supports
MPEG-2 ?

Just put your pics in a folder and copy them to a CD, then play on any DVD
player thats CDR/W compatible.

Can't be sure, but the only mention I find is to midi files.

I've been impressed with 3D-Album, www.3d-album.com, but am still working on
which is the best program to burn to DVD.

I was looking at that, but it says you have to download their player. I
am looking for a program where I can combine photos and music, burn it
onto a DVD, and have it play on any DVD player. Anyone know of the best
one for this?

Thanks.

I tried several different software: Ulead DVD PictureShow, Photo DVD,
FlipAlbum. But for picture show on DVD, none of the products come even
close to 3D-Album. 3D-Album provides the most interesting effects and
themes, especailly good for DVD movie. The result look like a
professional TV commertial. They have lots of new 3D effects that can
be downloaded for free. To create DVD movie, you need to have their
DVD capture software, which is sold separatedly for $25. This software
also creates AVI, WMV, and RM. While other products have limitation on
the number of pictures, for instance, Photo DVD allows 40 pictures
only, 3D-Album virtual has no limitation. I did create a DVD with over
1500 photos, the only complain I got is that the speed is too fast for
people to watch individual photos for long enough. But it is a matter
of your choice. You can set up your own pace using either the speed or
the interval control.

Take a look at MemoriesOnTV (www.memoriesontv.com). Can write DVD (MPEG2),
SVCD, VCD. No limits on number of images. Very nice images( much better than
the VCD or SVCD). Also has the Ken Burns effect. Can zoom, pan... multiple
effects and transitions. Can set up multiple albums/chapters (like regular
movie DVDs). I really liked the capabilities and flexibility of MoTV and
chose it over Pro Show Gold and XATshow.

Good luck,
W.
